Celebrity Hypocrite of the Week

Mark Ruffalo— almost-famous actor, uninformed environmentalist, and hypocrite.

Most people recognize Ruffalo as the Hulk in Marvel’s wildly popular Avengers franchise, but Ruffalo actually wants to be even greener—think an eco-friendly Hulk who smashes coal, oil, and gas production to ensure an economy based on wind and solar. Like so many other big green radicals, however, he doesn’t practice what he preaches. Below are just a few of his many hypocritical stances:

  • Ruffalo proudly marched in the People’s Climate March in September. The march was meant to fill people with the urge to fight climate change, however, all it really did was fill the streets of midtown Manhattan with trash. Environmental activist groups also brought in nearly 500 buses worth of eco-activists from across the U.S. and Canada. How’s that for going green?
  • When asked “if celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, who boasts that he will fly around the world to fight global warming and former VP Al Gore, are the best spokesmen for global warming given their huge carbon footprints,” he demurred. Instead, he said “Anyone who attacks Leonardo DiCaprio is either a coward or an ideologue.”
  • Ruffalo claims that climate change will lead to mass extinction. To help prevent this, Ruffalo has taken on the challenge of divesting from fossil fuels—in 3-5 years. If his divestment can wait 3-5 years (though it’s been noted the practice is pretty useless), Ruffalo must think that climate change isn’t such an imminent threat after all.
